私はイギリス南西部のバースにお住まいのターナー御夫妻宅に滞在させていただきました。
先生のお宅はちょうど住宅地の端にあり、バース市内に近いにもかかわらず（バスや車で15～30分程度）、
のどかな景色も楽しめるという素晴らしい場所にありました。
そして、お庭がとっても良かったです♪
私は「晴れ女」と自称しているのですが、滞在中も運良く快晴が続き、毎日ランチとディナーをお庭で頂きました。
美しい花を愛でながら美味しいお料理を頂き、会話も楽しく、食後ものんびりと鳥が水を飲みに来るのを眺めながらお茶をしたり･･･。

リンダ先生とご主人のレオナルドさんは大変教養のある方で、お話を聞くのがとても楽しかったです。
また好奇心も旺盛でいらっしゃるのか、日本文化にも深い関心を示し、私の話も上手に引き出してくれました。
英語のレッスンでは、私の興味に合わせて面白いテーマを準備してくださり、英語学習だけでなく、知識を深めることもできました。（主なテーマは、花の名前、イギリスの年中行事・教育制度・政治システム、イギリスと日本の皇室の話など）
私はホームリングア+αを選んだのですが、+αのアクティヴィティでは①バース市内のガーデン巡り、②衣装博物館見学とショッピング、③料理、④近くの村の観光をしました。バースから北の方には穏やかな丘陵地帯が広がり、「コッツウォルズ（The Cotswolds）」と呼ばれていますが、この辺りには石造りの建物が並ぶ美しい街や村が数多くあるとのこと。私が連れて行っていただいたCastle Combeという古い町並みが残る村や、Dyrham Parkという所にあるManor House(領主の館)もとても良い雰囲気でした。また、写真には撮れませんでしたが、バース郊外の伝統的なパブ、その周辺の素朴な町並み、移動中の車窓から見た丘陵風景も思いで深いです。
これらの感動を書き留めておきたいと思い、英語のお勉強も兼ねて、滞在中に英語日記をつけていました。
その一部を写真日記に編集したものがあるので、稚拙な英語ですが、私の体験の一部をお伝えできたらと思います。

 This is the cottage in which I stayed.
The walls were made of mellow stones and the roof was made of brown tiles.
“mellow”という単語は、リンダ先生に教わって新しく覚えた単語です。
先生のお宅と同様に、バース市内の家々の壁は、バース産の優しい色調の石で覆われていて、またどの家でも綺麗にお花を飾っているので、極ふつ～の住宅街の光景もとっても素敵でした。 |
 先生宅の住所に「Winston Cottage」と書かれていて、「これは何だろう？」と思っていたのですが、それは屋号でした。
ご主人のレオナルドさんがイギリス紳士らしくスマートにドアを開けてくださり、私は可愛い赤いドアをくぐりました。
リンダ先生はご主人を「Len（レン）」というニックネームで呼んでいらしたので、私もそのように呼ばせていただきました。
“Welcome to our Winston Cottage! ” Linda said to me. Len opened the entrance door for me. The red door was very pretty and the flowers were so beautiful. |
 “How about having dinner in the garden? ” Linda asked me.
“Yes, lovely.” I answered. |
 Because it was good weather every day of the week, we enjoyed having almost every lunch and dinner in the garden. |
 We saw many birds came to drink water from the bird bath.
They must have been thirsty because it was quite warm every day of the week. |
 Behind the garden, there were orchards of apple, walnut, and other trees.
The apples were growing bigger and getting red under the shiny, dazzling sun shine. |
 One day, Linda took me to the pilates class.
On the way to go there, we walked along the path and over the bridge. |
 The sound of the brook let me feel cool.
I found several kinds of unripe fruit and nut. |
 The clouds looked like scales of mackerel. |
 Children were playing in the school playground. |
 Linda also took me to the city centre of Bath.
There were many shops and places of entertainment. |
 There was an old stone bridge called “Pulteney Bridge”.
On the weir of the river, sea gulls were having a rest. |
 Beside the river, we saw a sculpture of a woodpecker made of plants. |
 The flowers in the gardens were fantastic. |
 We saw a dog bathing in the pond of the garden. |
 Another day, we visited the old manor house in Dyrham Park. |
 The deer were grazing in the garden.
It said in the booklet that Dyrham Park was one of the oldest deer parks in England. |
 There were many kinds of flowers in the gardens.
Bees were gathering honey, butterflies were sucking nectar from flowers and other insects were flying or having a rest. |
 And I found a beautiful fluffy feather of a peacock !! |
 We also visited the old village of Castle Combe.
I felt the beauty of the houses and the flowers in front of them. |
 There were stained glass windows in the church. |
 On the floor in front of each seat, there were lovely cushions called hassock or kneeler.
People put them under their knees when they pray to God. |
 With the help of Len & Linda,
I could visit many beautiful places in the Cotswolds. |
